Cherai

Cherai is a small coastal town in the Ernakulam district of Kerala, south India. It is about 30 km from Ernakulam. Cherai which is a part of the greater Vypin Island came into existence as a result of the great flooding of 1341. Cherai is home to a picturesque beach - Cherai beach.
Cherai has played an important role in the history of modern Kerala by becoming the birth place of two prominent political personsages of modern Kerala - Mathai Manjooran and Sahodaran Ayyappan.
Cherai Gowreeshwara Temple is one of the main Hindu temple. Temple is mainatained by Vinjhana Vardhini Sabha (V. V Sabha). It also known as Malyala palani. The festival in the temple is biggest festival in Eranakulam district. The festival happens every year towards the last 2 weeks of January or first 2 weeks of February. The main attractions are Elephant march(around 20-30 elephants).
There is one more famous temple in Cherai, which is Azheekkal Sree Varaha Temple famous for its beautiful chariot.

Cherai Beach is one of the most beautiful beaches in Kerala bordering the northern end of Vypeen Island, is located about 26 km from Ernakulam city, Kochi. The place is a unique combination of sea and backwaters rimmed by lush green coconut palms and paddy fields. The backwaters are a combination of lakes, lagoons, canals and estuaries. The 15 km long golden Beach is very clean, shallow and is ideal for swimming, surfing and sunbathing.
